The First Time I Raised Capital

I did NOT know I was doing it šŸ’ø

Let me tell you about the time I unintentionally asked someone for MONEY.

I was talking to a friend about a fix & flip deal I was planning to do.

I had $50K of my own and was sharing my strategy and the endless possibilities.

I wasn’t pitching. I wasn’t asking. I was just excited, and sharing the plan.

Next thing I know… She says:

ā€œI’ll put in $50K too.ā€

Just like that, we doubled our power by leveraging each other.

This happened with no fancy slides. No official raise. Just my vision and trust.

I immediately felt on top of the world. Like my work was valued by others who wanted in.

What I Learned As I Continued To Expand My Network To Strangers:

My feelings quickly changed when it was time to do it again with a stranger.

I was nervous. I talked SO fast. I doubted myself the whole time.

I assumed they would say NO. But I tried to do it anyway.

Because I wasn’t raised to not at least try to get what I wanted.

I thought the process was different but it wasn’t. The problem was my approach.

I realize now I was uncomfortable. I didn’t build the relationship before asking for $$.

The truth is…. Raising capital isn’t about being perfect

It’s about being prepared, clear, and confident (even if you have to fake it a little).

Here’s what I learned from that ā€˜stranger’ pitch:

  1. People invest in confidence before numbers. You have to believe it before they will.

  2. Having a clear ā€œuse of fundsā€ builds trust. Know exactly what you need and why.

  3. Lead with VALUE, not the ask. Before asking for something, GIVE them something first.

  4. Each convo is a touchpoint. Every win, loss, lesson is what gets people to say YES.

  5. Follow up is where the real magic happens. Most ā€œyesā€ answers don’t come on the first ask.

I had an unofficial framework and didn’t even know it yet. I had created my own ā€œsecret sauceā€.

I thought because I didn’t know this ā€˜stranger’ the way I did with my friend the process was different.

But it wasn’t. Had I did the exact same thing I would’ve had a better outcome.

My friend had watched me build businesses. She knew where I was going. She had confidence in me.

I had already given her proof, my POV, and access to what I was working on.

So by the time I shared the deal she was already in.

This ā€˜framework’ I had shouldn't have been just for my friend but for anyone I planned to ask for $$.

Why This Story Matters:

People online talk about raising capital. But they don’t tell you the part where they panicked.

Or how they googled their first investor contract (me I did this LOL)

Or lost money and learned hard painful lessons (yup, me again, I did this too).

But I WILL tell you because I want you prepared and not crumble when s*** hits the fan.

šŸ’” My Personal Friendly Reminder:
Your first raise won’t be your biggest.

But it will be the most important as it builds your belief.

Whether you’re raising $10K or $10M, the real work starts with belief.

Belief in your plan. Belief in your potential. Belief that you don’t have to do this alone.
